The last bona fide Hollywood star, Elizabeth Taylor took what she wanted from life and paid back with interest. A beauty who could silence rooms; an actress of great subtlety not afraid to go exuberantly over the top; a lady whose Rabelaisian instincts and roller coaster fortunes kept her front-page news for seven decades.

Her final act was to dedicate herself with generous bravado to the fight against HIV and Aids. “I’m Mother Courage, baby, I’ve seen it all.” No one doubted it.

Elizabeth Taylor is shown in her Oscar winning role as Gloria Wandrous in BUtterfield 8 (1960), directed by Daniel Mann.
